Oh, how our boys adore their Papa!
A few months ago John told me about a lesson that was taught in the mens’ group at Church that was all about when men are at their very best. The wonderful man who was teaching the lesson explained that his wife once told him that he was at his very best when he came home from church service or the Priesthood session of General Conference. I could tell John thought that was neat and semi-expected me to say that was when he was at his very best, too …
He continued to talk about when he felt he was at his very best and sort of asked me what I thought. I said to him that I felt like he always treated me like he just got home from church service or the Priesthood session. I think that’s just his general temperament and I feel so lucky about that. Then without hesitation I told him, “John, you are at your very very best when you are playing with the babies.”
His mouth dropped just a little and he paused. He looked down then looked back at me and quietly said, “That is so special to me that you’d say that.”
The truth is John was born to be a dad.
And I don’t mind one little bit that he’s at his very very best when he’s with the boys. I don’t feel deprived of his bestness at all. He makes conscious efforts to make sure he saves his best for everyone in his family and we all feel it. Together. And his bestness brings out each of our own bestnesses (whoa, now I’m getting crazy with the made up words…) …
What I mean is, we are all at our best when we are together. And that’s because of the way John leads our family and loves each of us unconditionally.
I have to say that I am so grateful for my John. I’m so grateful for his friendship with each baby. I’m so grateful they will learn how to be a man from him.
We are lucky, John. You make us lucky!! Happy Fathers’ Day to you!
We had a little lumberjack themed dinner celebration for our bearded leader. The boys loved it but could barely stand sitting through dinner when they knew they had presents to give their dad! I was anxious, too. It had taken everything in me to not spoil any surprises before Sunday night, especially telling him about the video we made him! For the record, the above picture is one of my all-time favorites of John–he’s cracking up because Charlie had just yelled (very distinctly) “SAY CHEESE DAD!!!” We were all shocked at little Choo Choo!
My other little lumberjacks ^^…
