A portrait of each of our children, each week of the year 2014.
James is being the dream big brother lately. He loves making Charlie laugh, trying to comfort him when he’s crying, and dancing for him and playing with him. It hasn’t always come naturally to him (we’ve had to encourage James to acknowledge Charlie’s existence plenty of times) but he’s really running with his new role these days. Every day we do what we call “Brother Time,” where I put James in Charlie’s crib with him and they play and laugh together and just strengthen their bond. It’s so special to see how tender James is with Charlie and to see Charlie’s eyes sparkle as he just watches James. Charlie had his six-moth check up this past week and James asked to sit up on the table with Charlie to hold his hand while he got immunizations. He stroked his hair, held his hand and gave him a sweet little pep talk through the whole thing. Of course Charlie still cried, and James kept telling everyone, “I’m giving him sugar, but it’s not working!” I think it worked in other ways, though.
Charlie weighs in at a whopping 16 pounds (and some change)! He’s the 50th percentile for weight and the 25th for height. He’s still having a rough time sleeping at night but we were given some tips that I feel good about trying, so hopefully we’ll see some improvements. He’s got a tooth just about to pop through, so he’s been pretty miserable lately. He loves to suck on frozen baby food (frozen in a fish Ikea ice cube tray) and his fingers. Not sitting up yet, but he’s pretty sturdy and can roll around with the best of them to get to where he wants to go. The miracle of his life has really been sinking in to my heart lately. I look at him, hold him, snuggle him, and just want to cry with gratitude. My little baby is here. He’s really, really here.
