My Man’s the Cutest…

So my old mission companions and besties, Brynn and Lyns, threw me the cutest wedding shower ever. One of the activities was reading an email John had written to Brynn, answering some questions she had emailed him. The plan was to ask me the same questions and see how our answers compared. Turns out we answered everything the same :). It was the highlight of the shower and everyone was amazed at how cute John is. Here is the email:

1. Tell us about your first date
Well, I had finally found my chance to ask Jessi out after having admired her with interest for quite some time. I wanted to plan out something that would be fun and be a little unique and would give us a lot of time to get to know each other. Also, I am big into food, so I made sure to include a decent amount of eating. You know, it’s nice to highlight some of your talents so that your date gets to see your good side, eh? 🙂 I went to pick her up at 8 o’clock, and was immediately impressed by how exceptionally pretty she was. I had already found church Jessi to be very attractive, and first-date Jessi was extra hot!

Right off the bat Jessi broke one of the major dating-game rules and introduced me to her whole family, which I loved! I thought her family was kind and charming, and loved that she didn’t care about following standard dating procedure, she just showed me who she really was from the very beginning.

After meeting the fam, Jess and I got in the car, and as soon as we were both in the car, we were in a full-on conversation. It was so easy to talk to each other, it felt like she was an old friend that I hadn’t seen for a long time and we wanted to catch up on everything we could. We drove to Noodles and Company, talking and laughing the whole way there. We went inside to eat, and I ordered the pesto and she ordered some classic Mac & Cheese. While we were there, Jessi taught me from her vast knowledge of communication about showing interest with body language by making eye contact and leaning in slightly to be engaged in the conversation. I made sure to make lots of eye contact and be leaning in to make sure she picked up my signals of interest, because I was already so impressed with her. Our conversation continued all through dinner and in the car on the way to our next activity.

From Noodles and Company, we drove to sugarhouse park, and I pulled out a loaf of bread so that we could feed the ducks. This was a special moment for me to share with Jessi, as I had hitherto never had a classic feeding-the-ducks date. We had lots of fun getting to know each other and trying to lure in some ducks with our Grandma Sycamore’s. It was already obvious how compatible and comfortable with each other we were. We kept saying the same things at the same time, which made us laugh. After we finished feeding the ducks, Jessi mentioned that we were right by the house she was about to move into, and we thought it would be fun to go and check it out. We parked across the street, and knocked on the door, then her landlord Steve let us in and proceeded to give us the tour. He took us downstairs so we could see where Jessi would be living, and it was fun to see how excited she was about her new place, and how friendly and nice she was to her landlord. Her landlord pointed out some shelves, and told her not to worry, he would be getting those ugly flower shelves out to the garage. In fact, since we were there, he figured that we might as well help move them if we didn’t mind. Hey, why not? we said. So we did some good old-fashioned furniture moving on our first date. After we finished with that, Steve remembered that the washing machine needed to go upstairs, and heck, I’m already here and in the moving zone, so…might as well move up the washing machine, too, eh? It was fun to be put to work on our first date, and to see Jessi being totally willing to show off her furniture-moving abilities. Moving furniture, we still were having fun and smiling together, and we laughed about it when we got back out to the car. 🙂

Well, once we finished moving the shelves and washing machine, we went to a fun place called The Greenhouse Effect. We ordered some crepes, and sat down and started talking like we had been the entire night. We were both very interested in getting to know each other, and I had never felt such a strong connection to anyone on a first date. After talking for an hour or two, I wished I could stay and talk to her all night. I thought it would be nice, though, to be respectful and impress her parents by having her home at a decent hour. So by about midnight, we were back to drop her off at her house. On her porch, I wrapped her up in a big hug, and broke the dating game rules and told her that I would love to take her out on another date as soon as possible. She responded by telling me that she would love to go out again as soon as possible. That was the beginning of mine and Jessi’s dating relationship, the best thing that has ever happened to me. We ended up going out again the next night, and the one after that, and the one after that, and the one after that….

2. If Jess had one hour to herself what would she do?
Well, I am assuming this question includes the standard parameters, and that in this hour, Jessi can do anything she wants with unlimited spending money. Jessi, being the clever girl that she is, would probably take advantage of this to first get herself a time machine with which she would be able to do all the things that she wanted in the hour given her. After that, she would probably go to a poetry reading, then a theatrical performance of some sort. After that, she would probably spend some time with her wonderful family (perhaps playing some D.-style charades), and then she would spend the rest of her unlimited time with me, to my great delight.

3. What first attracted you to Jessi?
I was first attracted to Jessi by her love of the Gospel. A little bit before I asked her out, she had given a talk in church on Father’s Day. I saw that in addition to being very cute, she had a great knowledge of the Gospel and a confidence and passion in the way she taught it. When I heard her speak, I said to myself, “I have to go out with that woman!”

4. What does she love most about you?
I would say that it is that I love her exactly the way she is.

5. What do you love most about her?
It is a three-way tie between her gorgeous eyes, her beautiful laugh, and her incredible love for everyone around her (especially for me).

6. What is each of your favoirte restaraunts?
Jessi’s is most definitely Red Robin. Mine is…my house, with my mom’s gourmet cooking.

7. What is Jess’s favorite season and why?
Jessi’s favourite season is winter because she loves that she gets to dress with lots of layers and show her fantastic style.

8. When did you first know you loved her?
On August first, at approximately 11 PM. We were driving together on our way back from a demolition derby, dressed up in our finest redneck attire. She told me she had a song that she thought I would love, then she put in a song about the law of chastity and sang the whole thing to me word for word. While she was singing away to me about abstinence, I was looking at her and saw the most beautiful woman that I had ever seen, and knew I had fallen in love with her.

9. What has been your favorite date?
I wanted to do something really special for Jessi to show her that I could do things that I knew she would like, even if I didn’t like them. I picked Jessi up, and she had a beautiful outfit on, and was looking very pretty as always. We went to my house and made a delicious fondue and a salad together, then ate together by candlelight. It was very romantic. Then, I had a big surprise for Jessi, and pulled out a movie that I knew she would love to watch together: Twilight. She was very excited that I was willing to watch it with her because I had previously made it known that Twilight was far from my favorite film/concept. So we started the movie and I was very excited that she showed how much she loved my surprise by distracting me from most of the movie. 🙂

13. What is your favorite vacation spot? hers? together? (if you’ve traveled together)
My favourite vacation spot is Sun Valley, Idaho. Hers is the San Juan Islands, I believe. The farthest place that we’ve traveled together would be Provo. That was a lovely little getaway.

14. If you could go to one place in the world where would you go?
To Ireland, with Jessi. She would probably say Canada for me, though, because she knows how much I love it.

Finally, this won’t be asked to her but just let us all know…

15. Why do you want to marry Jessi?
I want to marry Jessica because I have never known a more beautiful woman, inside and out. She is passionate about people and lives her life by following the Gospel and serving others. I have the time of my life when I am with her, whether that is dancing the macarana at a demolition derby, playing some seriously competitive charades with her family, or just going for a walk and talking. She is always there to catch me when I fall, and I know that my pain is her pain, and my joy is her joy. I certainly count it as a plus that she is the best kisser that I have ever kissed, and that she is a total babe. 🙂

I want to marry Jessi because I know she will be the perfect mother for our children and the perfect companion for whatever we may have in store together. I want to marry her because she makes me the best that I have ever been, and because nothing could make me so happy as to see her smile, and I want to be there to make her smile for all of eternity.
Oh, how I love this boy.
